Why did teachers always say “look it up in the dictionary” when asked how to spell something?

Isn’t being able to spell the word kind of a prerequisite to finding it in said dictionary?

I forgot how to spell “iniative” today. Flat out could not think of it. I’d still be floundering around between “inactive” and “innate” if Google hadn’t come to my rescue…

Should I order my stomach to “cease its mutiny” or “get its shit together”? Suffice it to say that it is not currently happy with me.
